GOPAN: Rice Bread Maker

Greatest thing since sliced bread: GOPAN, the machine that transforms rice into bread. It actually comes in handy considering that many agricultural regions of Asia aren't suitable to grow potatoes or wheat because there is too much rain and too high temperature, but are however suitable for rice cultivation. I wonder how it tastes ^^

The GOPAN is basically used in the same way as regular bread making machines. First of all, 220g of washed rice, with water, salt, sugar, and shortening, is placed in the bread case. Next, gluten and dry yeast are placed in the automatic dispenser on top. Then, all you need to do is press the start button. A loaf of “rice bread” is ready in about four hours.

Issei Sagawa: Interview With a Cannibal

Today i bring you a rather shocking interview. VBS.TV meets Issei Sagawa, a man who murdered and ate a Dutch woman in Paris back in 1981. Sagawa talks about the act of murder he committed, and how he became a free man after being deported to Japan and spending a few years in a mental hospital.
On the afternoon of June 13, 1981, a Japanese man named Issei Sagawa walked to the Bois de Boulogne, a park on the outskirts of Paris, carrying two suitcases. The contents of those suitcases, to the lament of a nearby jogger, was the dismembered body of a fellow student – a Dutch woman named Renée Hartevelt, whom Sagawa had shot three days prior and had spent the days since eating various parts of her body.

He was soon arrested. According to reports, Issei uttered, “I killed her to eat her flesh,” when they raided his home, whereupon they found bits of Renne still in his fridge.

Sagawa was declared insane and unfit for trial and was institutionalized in Paris. His incarceration was to be short, however, as the French public soon grew weary of their hard-earned francs going to support this evil woman-eater, and Issei was promptly deported. Herein followed a bizarre and seemingly too convenient set of legal loopholes and psychiatric reports that led doctors in Japan declaring him “sane, but evil.”

On the August 12, 1986, Sagawa checked himself out of Tokyo’s Matsuzawa Psychiatric hospital, and has been a free man ever since.

This is where the real story begins. VBS met up with him to find out what he’s been up to in the 30 years since.

Over 9000!

The term "Over 9000" is an internet meme that originated in a Dragon Ball Z episode and is often used to describe "a lot" of something. Internet Meme scientist Mike gives us the history and evolving use of this fascinating meme. I has to confess that did not know the existence of this term before seeing this video >___<'

100 YEN: The Japanese Arcade Experience

Today i bring you another interesting ongoing documentary ^^ This one focusing on the thriving, exciting, vibrant world of the arcades in Japan. I don't think arcades in Portugal are anywhere as popular as in Japan. Does you have any arcades in your neck of the woods?
100 Yen: The Japanese Arcade Experience is an hour long documentary focusing on the thriving, exciting, vibrant world of the arcades in Japan.

IMAGINE a world where video games reign supreme. Five stories of arcade cabinets, new and old, dominate the streets of downtown Tokyo. Welcome to Japan. A place where the arcades of the 80s and 90s not only still exist, but thrive and have evolved into elaborate environments of pleasure for any gamer.

Our 8-bit childhood has come a long way. A complete sensory overload is brought on by the multitudes of arcade games, they call out to you as you wander the vast expanses of these game havens. What was once a table top amusement has become an escape from your mundane existence. If you have a couple hundred Yen in your pocket, be prepared for The Ultimate Arcade Experience™

You can help by funding this project here and have a note in the credits with your name. To find out more go to http://www.indiegogo.com/100Yen

Hafu Film Teaser

Here's the teaser to the documentary "Hafu", a film which regards a very interesting subject, the experiences of the new generation of mixed-Japanese living in Japan, the "Hafus" - the Japanese term for people who are half-Japanese.
With an ever increasing movement of people between places in this transnational age, there is a mounting number of mixed-race people in Japan, some visible others not. "Hafu" is the unfolding journey of discovery into the intricacies of mixed-race Japanese and their multicultural experience in modern day Japan. The film follows the lives of five "hafus"--the Japanese term for people who are half-Japanese--and by virtue of the fact that living in Japan, they are forced to explore what it means to be multiracial and multicultural in a nation that once proudly proclaimed itself as the mono-ethnic nation. For some of these hafus Japan is the only home they know, for some living in Japan is an entirely new experience, and others are caught somewhere between two different worlds.
